Stephen Yiu-Wai Chu is Professor of School of Modern Languages and Cultures (Hong Kong Studies), The University of Hong Kong. Prof. Chu received his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and M.A. in Chinese Language and Literature from San Francisco State University. He was the founding Head of the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing of Hong Kong Baptist University before becoming the inaugural professor and Director of the Hong Kong Studies Programme. His research interests focus on Hong Kong culture, Cantopop, postcolonialism and globalization.

He has published more than twenty books, including the most recent Lost in Transition: Hong Kong Culture in the Age of China (Albany: SUNY Press, 2013). He has also published widely in academic journals of different disciplines such as literature, film, popular music, cultural policy, anthropology, sociology and legal studies. Having a longstanding interest in theories related to Hong Kong, he has recently been focusing on the reconfiguration of Hong Kong culture in the age of China.
